Augmentin IV 1200mg Injection contains Amoxycillin 1000mg and Clavulanic Acid 200mg, an antibiotic combination used to treat various bacterial infections.

Uses and Indications

• Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis media, and recurrent tonsillitis.
• Genito-urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis.
• Skin and soft tissue infections, including boils, abscesses, cellulitis, wound infections, and dental infections.
• Bone and joint infections, such as osteomyelitis.
• Intra-abdominal sepsis.
• Prophylaxis against infection associated with major surgical procedures, including gastrointestinal, pelvic, head and neck, cardiac, renal, joint replacement, and biliary tract surgery.

The Augmentin IV 1200mg Injection contains:

• Amoxycillin Sodium IP equivalent to Amoxycillin 1000mg (active ingredient).
• Potassium Clavulanate IP equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 200mg (active ingredient).

Dosage and Administration

Augmentin IV 1200mg Injection is administered by a healthcare professional, typically as a slow intravenous injection over 3-4 minutes or by intermittent infusion over 30-40 minutes. For adults and children over 12 years, the usual dose is 1.2g every eight hours; in more serious infections, frequency may increase to six-hourly intervals. The specific dosage for children under 12 years and patients with renal or hepatic impairment must be determined by a doctor. Treatment should not extend beyond 14 days without medical review. Reconstituted solutions should be used immediately, within 20 minutes for injection, or infused within four hours of reconstitution.

Storage and Disposal

• Store below 25°C.
• Do not freeze reconstituted solutions.

• Discard any unused solution.

Precautions and Safety

• Before administration, inform your doctor about any history of hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam agents.
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment; hepatic function should be monitored regularly.
• Avoid if infectious mononucleosis is suspected due to the risk of a morbilliform rash.
• Concomitant use with probenecid is not recommended as it may increase amoxicillin blood levels.
• Monitor prothrombin time (INR) if taken concurrently with oral anticoagulants.
• Ensure adequate hydration during treatment to prevent amoxicillin crystalluria.

Side Effects and Risks

• Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, skin rash, itchiness, and yeast infections.
• Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome), liver problems (jaundice, hepatic dysfunction), and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD).
• Consult a doctor immediately if severe symptoms like yellowing of skin or eyes, severe fatigue, dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, or severe skin reactions occur.
