Betadine 5% 250gm Ointment contains Povidone Iodine 5% w/w, an antiseptic and disinfectant agent used to treat and prevent infections in minor wounds, cuts, and burns.

Uses and Indications

• Treatment of skin infections, including varicose and decubitus ulcers.
• Pre- and post-surgical skin preparation.

The Betadine 5% 250gm Ointment contains:

• Povidone-Iodine USP 5% w/w (equivalent to 0.5% w/w available iodine).
• Excipients: Polyethylene Glycol 400 USP, Polyethylene Glycol 3350 USP, Sodium bicarbonate BP, Purified water BP.

Dosage and Administration

1. Clean the affected area thoroughly and dry it before applying the ointment.
2. Apply the ointment evenly over the damaged skin.
3. A dressing or bandage may be applied if required.
4. Apply 1-2 times daily for up to 14 days for skin infections, or as prescribed by a doctor.
5. Wash hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment.

Storage and Disposal

• Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
• Do not freeze.
• Keep out of reach of children.
• Replace the cap tightly after use.
• Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste; consult a pharmacist for proper disposal instructions.

Precautions and Safety

• For external use only.
• Avoid contact with eyes; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water and seek medical care.
• Do not use if allergic to povidone, iodine, or any other ingredients.
• Avoid use on extensive burn areas, deep puncture wounds, or animal bites without professional medical advice.
• Do not apply to large areas of skin or for prolonged periods (e.g., not more than 10% of total body surface for longer than 14 days) unless strictly indicated, especially in patients with kidney dysfunction or thyroid problems.
• This product may interfere with thyroid function tests. Patients with a history of thyroid disorders should use with caution and monitor thyroid function.
• Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation without strict medical indication.
• Avoid use in newborns and small infants due to increased risk of hypothyroidism.
• Do not use concurrently with other topical antiseptics containing octenidine, silver, mercury, or hydrogen peroxide.
• Discontinue use if irritation, redness, or swelling develops.

Side Effects and Risks

• Common side effects at the application site include skin irritation, redness, itching, burning sensation, or dryness, which usually subside during treatment.
• Rare side effects include skin hypersensitivity reactions such as delayed allergic contact reactions or small blisters.
• In isolated acute cases, systemic allergic reactions (anaphylactic reactions) with hypotension and/or shortness of breath have been reported.
• Prolonged use over large skin areas, especially on burned or damaged skin, may lead to significant iodine absorption, potentially causing dangerously high iodine levels in the blood, particularly in patients with kidney dysfunction. This can lead to thyroid hyperfunction (hyperthyroidism) in susceptible individuals.
• Betadine ointment may permanently discolor white gold jewelry; remove jewelry before application.
