Endomotors for Root Canal Treatment

An endomotor, also called an endo motor or endodontic motor, is a low-speed, high-torque electric motor that drives nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary and reciprocating files to clean and shape root canals. Unlike a general dental micromotor, it lets the dentist set an exact speed and torque limit for each file system, which helps prepare canals efficiently while reducing the risk of file breakage.

How an Endomotor Works

An endomotor has a control unit or motor body and a contra-angle handpiece that holds the file. The dentist selects the speed (in RPM) and the maximum torque (in Ncm) recommended by the file manufacturer, and the motor holds them steady during instrumentation. If the file binds and the torque limit is reached, auto reverse turns the file backwards to free it, which is one of the main safeguards against file separation.

Most models also store file presets, so the correct settings for a file system can be called up at the touch of a button. For example, the Eighteeth E-Connect endomotor runs from 120 to 1,000 RPM with torque from 0.5 to 4 Ncm, and offers continuous and reciprocation modes, auto torque reverse and torque calibration.

Types of Endomotors

Cordless and Corded Endomotors

Cordless endomotors run on a rechargeable battery and carry their controls and display on the handpiece, so there is no cable to limit movement around the chair. Corded endomotors have a separate control unit with a larger display and run on mains power, so they never need charging mid-procedure. The NSK Endo-Mate DT is an example of a control-unit endomotor. In India, "wireless endomotor" is usually used to mean a cordless model.

Endomotors with a Built-In Apex Locator

An endomotor with an integrated apex locator measures the position of the file tip in the canal while it is shaping. Many models can slow down, stop or reverse automatically as the file approaches the apex, which helps prevent over-instrumentation. Brushless Endomotors

Rotary and Reciprocating Endomotors

A rotary endomotor turns the file continuously in one direction, for conventional NiTi rotary systems. A reciprocating endomotor moves the file back and forth through unequal angles, which reduces torsional stress and is used with reciprocating file systems. Many modern endomotors offer both modes, so one motor can run both types of file.

• For cordless models, charge the battery as instructed and replace it when its run time falls noticeably.
