Dental alginate is an irreversible hydrocolloid impression material used to record the shape of the teeth and surrounding oral tissues. When the powder is mixed with water, the trisodium phosphate reacts with calcium ions first, which delays setting long enough to mix and seat the tray. Once the retarder is used up, calcium ions react with the soluble alginate to form insoluble calcium alginate. This creates the elastic gel that records the impression.

 

Water-Powder Ratio, Working Time and Setting Time

The water-powder ratio varies by product. Use the scoop and water measure supplied by the manufacturer, and mix vigorously against the bowl wall for a smooth, bubble-free paste. Too much water weakens the set material, while too little makes the mix thick and grainy.

Water temperature has a direct effect on setting. Warmer water speeds up setting and cooler water slows it down. Cooler water can buy useful working time in warm clinic conditions.
