Uses and Indications

  • Pneumonia, including community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Gynaecological infections such as endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Septicaemia (bacterial infection of the blood).
  • Empiric management for presumed infections in adult patients with febrile neutropenia.

Dosage and Administration

Meronem 1gm Injection is administered intravenously by a doctor or nurse. It can be given as an intravenous infusion over approximately 15 to 30 minutes or as an intravenous bolus injection over approximately 3 to 5 minutes for doses up to 1gm. The dose and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, and the patient's age and body weight. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve quickly, to prevent the infection from returning or worsening.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store below 25°C or at room temperature.
  • Protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Freshly prepared solutions should be used immediately.
  • Solutions reconstituted with sterile water for injection for bolus administration (up to 50 mg/mL) may be stored for up to 2 hours at 15-25°C or for up to 12 hours at 4°C.
  • Solutions for infusion reconstituted with 0.9% sodium chloride may be stored for 1 hour at up to 25°C or 15 hours at up to 5°C.
  • Solutions reconstituted with 5% dextrose should be used immediately.
  • Any unused product or waste material should be disposed of in accordance with local requirements.

Precautions and Safety

  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to meropenem, other carbapenems, penicillins, or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy (seizures), liver problems, or kidney problems.
  • Liver function should be monitored in patients with pre-existing liver disorders.
  • Blood tests may be advised to monitor blood cell count and kidney function during treatment.
  • Concomitant use with valproic acid/sodium valproate/valpromide is not recommended due to a potential reduction in valproate concentration, which may cause seizures.
  • Concomitant use with probenecid is not recommended as it inhibits the renal excretion of meropenem.
  • Meropenem should not be mixed with or physically added to solutions containing other drugs as compatibility has not been established.
  • Meronem 1gm Injection contains 90 mg sodium per 1gm vial.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Common side effects include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, skin rash, itchy skin, and pain/inflammation at the injection site.
  • These side effects are usually temporary; consult your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
  • Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe allergic reactions (severe rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, shortness of breath, wheezing), severe watery or bloody diarrhea, and seizures.
  • Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor immediately.
