Augmentin Duo 625mg Tablet contains Amoxycillin (500mg) and Clavulanic Acid (125mg), an antibiotic combination used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.

Uses and Indications

• Upper respiratory tract infections, including recurrent tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media.
• Lower respiratory tract infections, such as acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB), lobar pneumonia, and bronchopneumonia.
• Genito-urinary tract infections, including cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, and female genital infections.
• Skin and soft tissue infections, such as boils, abscesses, cellulitis, and wound infections.
• Bone and joint infections, including osteomyelitis.
• Dental infections, such as dentoalveolar abscess.
• Other infections like septic abortion, puerperal sepsis, and intra-abdominal sepsis.

The Augmentin Duo 625mg Tablet contains:

• Amoxycillin (as Trihydrate) IP equivalent to Amoxycillin 500 mg (active ingredient).
• Clavulanic Acid (as Potassium Clavulanate Diluted) IP equivalent to Clavulanic Acid 125 mg (active ingredient).

Dosage and Administration

1. Adults and Children over 12 years: For mild to moderate infections, one Augmentin Duo 625mg Tablet is typically taken every 12 hours. For severe infections, one Augmentin Duo 625mg Tablet may be taken every 8 hours.
2. Take with food: Administer at the start of a meal to minimize potential gastrointestinal intolerance and optimize absorption.
3. Swallow whole: Tablets should be consumed whole and not broken.
4. Complete the course: Always complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent treatment failure and resistance.
5. Duration: Treatment should generally not be extended beyond 14 days without a medical review.

Storage and Disposal

• Store in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
• Keep the tablets in their original blister pack until it is time to take them.
• Keep out of reach of children.
• Discard any unused tablets after 30 days of the foil pouch being opened.

Precautions and Safety

• Inform your doctor if you have a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics, as serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur.
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction; regular monitoring of liver function is advisable.
• Dosage adjustments are necessary for patients with renal impairment.
• Maintain adequate fluid intake and urinary output during treatment to reduce the risk of crystalluria.
• This medicine is an antibacterial agent and is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
• Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially methotrexate and probenecid, as interactions may occur.
• Be aware of the risk of antibiotic-associated colitis, including pseudomembranous colitis and haemorrhagic colitis, and drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome (DIES).
• Rare but serious skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), have been reported.

Side Effects and Risks

• Common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, abdominal discomfort, headache, and fatigue.
• Less common effects may include oral or vaginal yeast infections, black hairy tongue, and teeth discoloration.
• Serious but rare side effects include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing), severe skin reactions, liver problems (jaundice, elevated liver enzymes), and convulsions.
