Surgical Tape: Medical Adhesive Tape for Dressings, IV Lines and Wound Care

Surgical tape, also called medical tape or medical adhesive tape, is a pressure-sensitive tape used to hold dressings, gauze, bandages, cannulas and tubing in place on the skin. In Indian hospitals and pharmacies, it is commonly known as doctor tape, dressing tape, saline tape, hospital tape and plaster tape. Microporous paper tape is widely used and is often simply called micropore tape.

Surgical tapes differ in backing material, adhesive strength, breathability and water resistance. Types of Surgical Tape

The backing material determines how a tape behaves on the skin. Choosing the right type matters as much as choosing the right dressing.

Microporous Paper Tape

Microporous paper tape has a thin, non-woven backing with tiny pores that allow air and moisture vapour to pass through. It is lightweight, tears easily by hand and typically uses a hypoallergenic, latex-free adhesive, making it a common choice for light dressings, frequent dressing changes and sensitive or elderly skin. It holds less firmly than silk or cloth tape and is not water-resistant. Examples include Romsons Kenpore, Sterimed Steripore and 4Upore non-woven surgical paper tape.

Silk and Cloth Surgical Tape

Silk-type tapes, such as 3M Durapore, use a woven, cloth-like backing with strong adhesion and tear cleanly in both directions. They are used to secure heavier dressings, splints and tubing where paper tape may lift. Traditional cotton cloth tape with a zinc oxide adhesive provides even stronger fixation and is used for strapping, although it is less breathable and may irritate sensitive skin. Transparent Plastic Tape

Transparent tape has a perforated polyethylene film backing that is water-resistant, tears easily along the perforations and allows staff to see the skin underneath. Waterproof, Silicone, Foam and Elastic Tapes

• Waterproof tapes: Use a film or foam backing that helps seal out water, making them useful for bathing and wet environments.
• Silicone tapes: Use a soft silicone adhesive that removes with minimal skin stripping and can often be repositioned. They are preferred for fragile skin in neonates, older patients and long-term care.
• Foam tapes: Are thick and cushioning, conform to body contours and are used for pressure dressings and securing devices over joints.
• Elastic tapes: Stretch with movement and are suitable for joints and areas that swell.

Uses of Surgical Tape

• Securing gauze, pads and secondary wound dressings after injuries and surgery.
• Fixing IV cannulas, saline lines and catheters, alongside purpose-made cannula fixators.
• Holding nasogastric tubes, drains and other medical tubing in place.
• Anchoring bandage ends and light splints.
• Covering post-operative sites, injection sites and minor cuts as part of a dressing.

Surgical tape holds a dressing over a wound. It is not designed to close a wound; skin closure strips, sutures or staples are used for that purpose.

Surgical Tape Sizes and Pack Sizes

Surgical tape is sold by width and roll length. Common widths include 1/2 inch (about 1.25 cm), 1 inch (2.5 cm), 2 inches (5 cm) and 3 inches (7.5 cm). Common roll lengths are 5 m and 9.14 m (10 yards). Boxes are usually packed by width, so a box of narrow 1/2-inch rolls contains more rolls than a box of 3-inch rolls. Packs of 24, 12, 6 and 4 rolls are typical.

Narrow 1/2-inch and 1-inch tapes are suitable for cannulas, tubing and small dressings, while 2-inch and 3-inch tapes cover larger dressings and post-operative sites. Wards that use several widths often keep 1-inch tape as the everyday size and wider rolls for surgical and burns dressings.

How to Choose the Right Surgical Tape

There is no single best surgical tape for every patient. The right choice balances holding strength with gentleness on the skin. Consider the following factors:

1. Skin condition: Choose paper or silicone tape for sensitive, fragile, paediatric or elderly skin. Avoid strong zinc oxide tape where the skin is thin.
2. What is being secured: Use paper tape for light dressings, silk or cloth tape for heavier dressings and splints, and transparent tape for IV lines and tubes.
3. Moisture: Consider transparent or waterproof tape where the site may get wet or needs to stay dry.
4. Visibility: Choose transparent tape when the site needs regular checking without removing the tape.
5. Frequency of changes: Use gentle, breathable tape where dressings are changed frequently.
6. Allergy: Consider hypoallergenic, latex-free adhesives for patients with known tape or latex sensitivity.
7. Width, length and pack size: Match the tape dimensions to the dressing size and the ward's monthly usage.

How to Apply and Remove Surgical Tape Safely

Tape can damage skin if applied or removed carelessly. This is known as medical adhesive-related skin injury (MARSI) and includes skin stripping, tension blisters and irritation. To reduce the risk:

• Apply tape to clean, dry skin and smooth it down without stretching it.
• Use a skin barrier product under tape on fragile or frequently taped skin.
• Remove tape slowly, low and parallel to the skin, supporting the skin as you peel. An adhesive remover can help with stronger tapes.
• Replace tape that is wet, soiled or lifting, and check the skin at every dressing change.
• Stop using a tape and seek clinical advice if redness, itching or a rash develops underneath it.
