Frequently Asked Questions
Ligation Clips for Open and Laparoscopic Surgery
A ligation clip, also called a ligating clip or surgical clip, is a small V-shaped or U-shaped implant that is closed around a blood vessel, duct or other tubular structure to seal it permanently. Clips are applied with a matching clip applier and give fast, secure ligation without sutures or energy devices, which is why they are a standard part of laparoscopic and open surgery.
This range includes titanium ligating clips in cartridge packs from brands such as Meril and mb+, for hospital operation theatres, day-care surgical centres and laparoscopic surgeons.
Types of Ligation Clips
Titanium Ligating Clips
Titanium clips are the traditional metal ligation clip. Medical-grade titanium is biocompatible, corrosion-resistant and non-ferromagnetic. Most designs have internal grooves that grip the tissue and resist slipping, and the applier crimps the clip closed around the vessel. They are non-absorbable and stay in place permanently. Examples include the mb+ titanium ligating clips and the Meril Mirus titanium ligation clips, which are available in four sizes.
Polymer Locking Ligation Clips
Polymer ligation clips are made from a non-absorbable medical-grade polymer and close with a locking latch at the tip, so the clip stays securely shut around larger vessels and tissue bundles. They are radiolucent and do not create artefacts on CT, MRI or X-ray images. They are widely known by the brand name Hem-o-lok (Teleflex), and other manufacturers make polymer locking clips too, such as the Welfaremedical polymer ligaclip. Polymer locking clips need their own dedicated appliers.
Absorbable Ligation Clips
Absorbable clips are made from a polymer that the body breaks down over time. They are used where a permanent implant is not wanted, and are less common than titanium and non-absorbable polymer clips.

Clip Sizes, Cartridges and Clip Appliers
Ligation clips come in sizes from small to large (some ranges add extra-large), often colour-coded and sometimes numbered 100 to 400. Each size is designed for a range of vessel or tissue diameters, which the manufacturer specifies in the instructions for use. Clips are usually supplied in cartridges of 6, packed in boxes of several cartridges.
Every clip must be used with an applier that matches its brand, size and type: open or laparoscopic, and the right shaft diameter. A clip from one system will not necessarily load or close correctly in another system's applier. Compatible appliers are listed under ligating clip appliers.
Where Ligation Clips Are Used
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, to occlude the cystic duct and cystic artery
- Appendicectomy and other general and gastrointestinal surgery
- Urological, gynaecological, thoracic and vascular surgery
- Thyroid, bariatric and colorectal surgery
- Marking a site for later imaging or radiotherapy, with titanium clips
Some polymer locking clips are contraindicated for specific uses, such as ligating the renal artery during laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. Always check the manufacturer's instructions for use.
How to Choose Ligation Clips
- Material: titanium for smaller vessels and ducts, and when an established metal clip system is in use; polymer locking clips for larger structures or where imaging artefacts must be avoided.
- Size: match the clip size to the vessel or tissue diameter in the manufacturer's sizing chart.
- Applier compatibility: confirm that the clips fit the appliers already in your OT (brand, size, open or laparoscopic, shaft diameter).
- Cartridge design: check how securely clips sit in the cartridge and how easily they load during surgery.
- Pack size: compare the number of cartridges per box and clips per cartridge against your monthly case volume.
- Sterility and labelling: sterile, single-use packs with batch number, expiry date and manufacturer details.
Ligation Clip Price in India
Ligation clip price depends on the material, brand, size and the number of cartridges per box. Indian-made titanium clips are generally the most economical, while polymer locking clips and imported brands cost more. Because box sizes vary, compare the price per clip: divide the box price by cartridges per box multiplied by clips per cartridge. Current prices are shown in the listing above.
