Pipettes are essential tools used in laboratories to transfer precise volumes of liquid. Found in nearly every lab, they symbolize scientific work and precision. With various types available, from disposable plastic to high-grade technical models, each requires specific guidelines for proper use and maintenance. Pipettes serve diverse purposes with varying levels of precision, making them indispensable in scientific research and experimentation.

Types of Lab Pipettes:

Graduated Pipettes: Graduated pipettes are versatile macro pipettes marked with graduations for different volumes. They require suction for liquid transfer. When selecting a graduated pipette, choose the nearest size to the required volume. Rinse the pipette before use and hold it at a 90-degree angle without touching the beaker's bottom. Draw the liquid slowly using the rubber bulb until the desired volume is reached. Read the volume at eye level based on the meniscus. For low viscosity liquids, measure at the lower meniscus; for high viscosity liquids, measure at the upper meniscus. Dispense the solution by releasing pressure and holding the pipette at a 45-degree angle.

Serological Pipettes: Serological pipettes transfer liquid in milliliter volumes, with graduation marks starting closer to the tip. They come in various sizes, from 0.1 ml to 50 ml, and are blow-out pipettes designed to be blown out by external air pressure or gravitation force. Made of optically clear polystyrene, they are calibrated for accuracy and sterilized using gamma irradiation.

Pasteur Pipettes: Louis Pasteur redesigned basic glass pipettes in the 19th century for more efficient liquid transfer. Made of glass or plastic, Pasteur pipettes feature a separate rubber bulb to control liquid flow. They transfer small volumes of liquids but are not calibrated or marked with volumetric guidelines.

Volumetric Pipettes: Volumetric pipettes offer precise accuracy, featuring long slender necks above and below a large bulb with one graduation mark. Made from borosilicate glass, they are calibrated for single volumes typically ranging from 1 to 100 ml.

Micropipettes:
