Pregnancy tests, which detect the hormone HCG in blood or urine samples(Clinical Pathology), are highly reliable with an accuracy rate of about 99%. HCG becomes detectable around 10–14 days after conception, typically aligning with a missed period. Early detection enables timely healthcare management, lifestyle adjustments, and prenatal care scheduling.

How Pregnancy Kits Work:

The mechanism of a pregnancy test involves measuring the level of the hormone HCG, which increases during pregnancy. HCG, known as the pregnancy hormone, is produced by the cells that form the placenta and nourish the developing embryo. It is released when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.

HCG can be detected in both blood and urine approximately 10 to 14 days after conception and typically peaks between 8 and 11 weeks of gestation. A negative HCG result indicates a level less than 5 ml U/ml (milli-international units per millilitre), while a positive result for pregnancy is a level greater than or equal to 25 ml U/ml.

Types of Pregnancy Tests: Urine Tests vs. Blood Tests

Urine and blood tests are the two main types of pregnancy tests available.

Urine tests: These tests detect HCG, the pregnancy hormone, using special strips (Urine Testing). They're highly effective, with a reliability rate of about 99%. Three methods include dropping urine on a strip, testing in the urine stream, or dipping the strip in collected urine. HCG can be detected around 10 days after conception. Using first morning urine is ideal. Avoid excessive fluid intake before testing, check expiration dates, and follow instructions carefully.

Blood tests: They are less common due to cost and similarity in results to urine tests, offering distinct advantages. They involve analysing a blood sample from a vein in your arm, providing not only the presence but also the precise amount of HCG hormone. This level of detail is beneficial for situations such as fertility treatments or when complications are suspected. Blood tests are more sensitive than urine tests, detecting pregnancy as early as seven to 10 days after conception. Results are typically obtained within a few hours to two days. Additionally, blood tests allow for monitoring HCG levels throughout pregnancy, with deviations indicating potential issues or multiple...
