Laryngoscopy is conducted using a laryngoscope, a slender tube equipped with a light source, lens, and video camera, enabling healthcare providers to examine the larynx closely. This procedure can be performed either in a clinic office or as surgery in an operating room.

Types of Laryngoscopes:

There are various methods for performing a laryngoscopy:

Indirect laryngoscopy: This involves using a small mirror and a light to examine the throat. The mirror, similar to a dentist's tool, is placed against the roof of the mouth. A light is shone into the mouth to view the reflection in the mirror. This quick procedure can be completed in 5 to 10 minutes in a doctor's office. Patients may sit in a chair during the exam, and a numbing spray may be used to reduce discomfort, although it may cause gagging sensations.

Direct fiber-optic laryngoscopy: This is often referred to as flexible laryngoscopy, is a common method used by many doctors. It involves inserting a small telescope attached to a cable into your nose and down into your throat. This procedure typically takes less than 10 minutes. Prior to the examination, you will receive a numbing medication for your nose. In some cases, a decongestant may also be administered to open your nasal passages. Gagging is a common reaction to this procedure.

Direct laryngoscopy: This is the most extensive type, involving the use of a laryngoscope to push down the tongue and lift up the epiglottis, the cartilage flap covering the windpipe. This procedure may be performed to remove small growths or obtain tissue samples for testing. Additionally, it can be used to insert a breathing tube during emergencies or surgeries. Direct laryngoscopy typically lasts up to 45 minutes and requires general anaesthesia to ensure the patient is unconscious throughout the procedure. During the examination, any throat growths can be removed, or tissue samples can be collected for further evaluation.

  • Miller Laryngoscope: A straight blade laryngoscope often preferred for paediatric patients or patients with limited mouth opening.
  • Fiberoptic Laryngoscope: Uses fiber-optic technology to provide a clear view of the larynx, commonly used for flexible laryngoscopy.
