Question 1

What is a suction tip used for?

Accepted Answer

A suction tip connects to a dental suction line and removes saliva, water, blood and debris from the patient's mouth during treatment. This keeps the working field clear and dry and improves patient comfort.

Question 2

What is the difference between a saliva ejector and a high-volume suction tip?

Accepted Answer

A saliva ejector is a narrow, flexible tip on the low-volume line that slowly removes saliva and can be left in place. A high-volume evacuator (HVE) tip is wider, connects to the high-volume line, removes large amounts of fluid and debris quickly and helps reduce aerosols. HVE tips are held by the dentist or assistant.

Question 3

Are dental suction tips disposable or autoclavable?

Accepted Answer

Saliva ejectors and most surgical and endo tips are single-use and disposable. Metal suction tips and some HVE tips can be cleaned and autoclaved. Check the product label to confirm.

Question 4

What is a metal suction tip used for?

Accepted Answer

A metal suction tip, such as a Frazier tip, is a reusable stainless steel instrument used for precise suction in surgical sites. Its thumb vent lets the clinician adjust suction strength, and it is autoclaved between patients.

Question 5

Is a Yankauer suction tip the same as a dental suction tip?

Accepted Answer

No. A Yankauer tip is a larger, rigid suction tip with a rounded end, used mainly in the throat and in general and oral surgery with hospital suction machines. Dental suction tips are designed to fit dental chair suction lines.

Question 6

Which suction tip is compatible with my dental chair?

Accepted Answer

Saliva ejectors fit the low-volume valve and HVE tips fit the high-volume valve. Surgical, metal and endo tips usually need an adapter. Check your chair's valve sizes before ordering.

Question 7

Should the patient close their lips around the saliva ejector?

Accepted Answer

No. Closing the lips around a saliva ejector can create backflow, where fluid in the suction line flows back into the patient's mouth. Patients should keep their lips relaxed and open.

Question 8

How often should dental suction lines be cleaned?

Accepted Answer

Flush suction lines with water after each patient, and clean them with an evacuation system cleaner at least at the end of each day. Follow the chair and cleaner manufacturers' instructions.
