Dosage and Administration

  1. Boil water and let it cool to a safe drinking temperature.
  2. Add the entire contents of one 21gm sachet to 1 litre of cooled drinking water, or 1 teaspoonful of powder in 200 ml (1 glass) of cooled water.
  3. Stir well until the powder is completely dissolved.
  4. Infants and Children: Consume 1-2 litres (5-10 glasses) over a period of 24 hours, or as advised by a physician.
  5. Adults: Consume 2-4 litres (10-20 glasses) over a period of 24 hours, or as advised by a physician.
  6. Continue treatment until diarrhoea stops or dehydration is corrected.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store the sachets in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • The prepared solution must be consumed within 24 hours. Discard any unused solution after this period to avoid contamination.

Precautions and Safety

  • Consult a doctor before use if you have impaired kidney (renal) function or a known or suspected intestinal obstruction.
  • Use with caution in individuals with heart conditions or those on a restricted sodium diet.
  • Diabetics should consult a doctor before use due to the dextrose content.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage; overuse or improper preparation can be harmful and lead to electrolyte imbalances.
  • Do not add extra sugar or salt to the prepared ORS solution.
  • This product is not intended for daily use unless specifically advised by a doctor.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Prolyte ORS is generally well-tolerated when used correctly.
  • Mild side effects may include stomach discomfort, bloating, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Excessive intake or incorrect dilution can lead to imbalanced sodium or potassium levels (hypernatremia or hyperkalaemia).
  • In rare cases, severe side effects such as dizziness, appetite loss, increased thirst, confusion, irritability, muscle twitching, swelling of ankles/feet/eyelids, convulsions, high heart rate (tachycardia), high blood pressure, or kidney damage may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms develop.
