Poviend 5% 15gm Ointment contains Povidone-Iodine 5% w/w, a broad-spectrum antiseptic used to prevent and treat skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.

 

Benefits

This ointment offers broad-spectrum antimicrobial action against bacteria, fungi, and viruses, helping to maintain skin hygiene and support a cleaner healing environment. It is generally less irritating to the skin compared to conventional iodine preparations and will not permanently stain natural fabrics.

 

Uses and Indications

  • Prevention and treatment of infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and abrasions.
  • Management of infection in minor burns.
  • Treatment of skin infections, including infected surgical incisions, leg ulcers, impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis.
  • Pre-operative skin cleansing before minor surgical procedures.
  • Degerming care of stasis ulcers, decubitus ulcers, and the umbilical area.

Dosage and Administration

  1. Clean the affected area thoroughly and dry it before application.
  2. Apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area.
  3. Apply once or twice daily, or as directed by a physician.
  4. The treated area may be covered with a sterile bandage if required.
  5. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, in a cool, dry place.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Replace the cap tightly after use.

Precautions and Safety

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes; rinse immediately with water if contact occurs.
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to iodine or povidone.
  • Avoid applying over large areas of the body, on deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious/extensive burns without medical advice.
  • Inform your doctor if you have thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter) or kidney problems, as iodine absorption can affect these conditions.
  • Not recommended for use in children below two years of age.
  • Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding; consult a doctor.
  • Discontinue use if irritation, redness, swelling, or allergic reactions occur.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Common side effects include mild skin irritation, redness, burning, itching, dryness, or peeling at the application site.
  • Rare but serious side effects may include allergic reactions (hives, difficult breathing, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat), blistering, or severe irritation.
  • Prolonged use or application over large areas, especially in susceptible individuals, may lead to systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia, renal impairment, or thyroid dysfunction.
