Pantojohn 20mg Tablet contains Pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid production and treat various acid-related conditions.

Uses and Indications

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and associated symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux.
  • Healing of erosive esophagitis, which is damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid.
  • Treatment of peptic ulcers, including stomach and duodenal ulcers.
  • Management of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production.
  • Prevention of gastroduodenal ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in at-risk patients requiring continuous NSAID treatment.
  • Long-term management and prevention of relapse in reflux oesophagitis.

The Pantojohn 20mg Tablet contains:

  • Pantoprazole IP 20 mg (as sodium sesquihydrate) (active ingredient).
  • Excipients: Sodium carbonate, mannitol, crospovidone (type B), hydroxypropylcellulose, calcium stearate, hypromellose, yellow iron oxide (E172), methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) dispersion 30%, sodium laurilsulfate, polysorbate 80, triethyl citrate.

Dosage and Administration

  1. Take one Pantojohn 20mg Tablet once daily, preferably in the morning, about one hour before a meal.
  2. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or split the tablet, as this may affect its delayed-release properties.
  3. The exact dosage and duration of treatment will be determined by your doctor based on your medical condition.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store Pantojohn 20mg Tablets in a closed container at room temperature, ideally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
  • Do not dispose of unused or expired medicines via wastewater or household waste. Consult your pharmacist for proper disposal methods.

Precautions and Safety

  • Do not take Pantojohn 20mg Tablet for immediate relief of heartburn, as it may take 1 to 4 days for the medicine to fully work.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver problems, as a lower dose may be necessary.
  • Long-term use (over three months) may lead to decreased magnesium levels in the blood, which can cause fatigue, confusion, dizziness, muscle twitches, and irregular heartbeat. Your doctor may monitor your magnesium levels.
  • Prolonged use (over one year) may increase the risk of bone fractures, gut infections, and vitamin B12 deficiency.
  • This medicine is not recommended for use in children below 12 years of age without specific medical advice.
  • Heartburn symptoms can sometimes mimic those of a heart attack. Seek emergency medical help if you experience chest pain that spreads to your jaw or shoulder, accompanied by anxiety or light-headedness.
  • Consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, gas, dizziness, and joint pain.
  • Rare but serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, trouble breathing), kidney problems (acute interstitial nephritis), and severe diarrhea caused by Clostridioides difficile.
  • If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, or signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor immediately.
