Ironfast Injection 5ml contains Ferric Hydroxide Sucrose, an iron replacement product used to treat iron deficiency anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease.

 

Benefits

This medication replenishes the body's iron stores, which are essential for the formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin. Uses and Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA).
  • Management of IDA in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those undergoing hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or who are non-dialysis dependent.
  • For patients who cannot tolerate oral iron therapy, are non-compliant with it, or when oral preparations are ineffective.
  • When a rapid increase in iron levels is clinically necessary.

The Ironfast Injection 5ml contains:

  • Ferric Hydroxide in Complex with Sucrose USP equivalent to elemental Iron 100 mg (active ingredient).
  • Water for Injections BP q.s. to 5 mL.

Dosage and Administration

  1. Administer intravenously either as a slow injection or as an infusion.
  2. For slow intravenous injection, administer 1 mL (20 mg elemental iron) per minute, not exceeding 100 mg (5 mL) per injection.
  3. For intravenous infusion, dilute 100 mg (5 mL) in a maximum of 100 mL of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection and infuse over a period of at least 15 minutes.
  4. If applicable, administer early during a dialysis session.
  5. The total treatment course and specific dosage must be determined by a qualified doctor based on individual patient needs.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store in the original carton at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
  • Do not freeze.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Discard any unused portion as this product contains no preservatives.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Precautions and Safety

  • This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Ferric Hydroxide Sucrose.
  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur. Patients should be monitored for at least 30 minutes after administration.
  • Hypotension may occur; monitor blood pressure closely during and after administration.
  • Do not administer to patients with evidence of iron overload. Regular monitoring of hematologic responses and iron parameters is necessary.
  • Avoid mixing this injection with other medications or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions.
  • Use with caution during pregnancy, as severe adverse reactions may cause fetal bradycardia.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Common side effects include taste changes, reactions at the injection site (pain, swelling, redness), nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, hypotension, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, back pain, and pain in extremities.
  • Serious but rare side effects include severe hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis, shock, loss of consciousness, collapse, dyspnea, seizures) and hypertension.
  • Injection site discoloration may occur if extravasation happens.
