The Goodwill Hemosponge Absorbable Gelatin Sponge Hemostat, measuring 10 x 10 x 10 mm, is a sterile, off-white, non-elastic, porous, and pliable foam designed for effective hemostasis during various surgical procedures. Prepared from highly purified gelatin (collagen-derived protein), this biocompatible material is naturally absorbed by the body over time, eliminating the need for removal in many cases.

This gelatin sponge hemostat is particularly utilized when controlling capillary, venous, and arteriolar bleeding by conventional methods like pressure or ligature is either impractical or ineffective. It is widely applied for arresting bleeding following tooth extraction and in other oral surgeries. Its small size makes it advantageous for use in areas such as epistaxis and minor surgical procedures like tissue biopsies.

The Hemosponge accelerates the natural clotting process by providing a porous matrix for platelets to adhere to. Upon contact with the sponge's matrix, platelets activate and release a series of blood clotting factors, thereby promoting self-aggregation and activating the cascade of fibrin formation.
