Duphalac 150ml Syrup

Duphalac 150ml Syrup is an oral solution containing Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide, as its active ingredient. Classified as an osmotic laxative, it functions by drawing water into the colon, which helps to soften the faecal mass and stimulate normal colonic peristalsis, thereby facilitating easier bowel movements. This mechanism distinguishes it from conventional laxatives by promoting physiological bowel regulation.

This 150ml oral solution is indicated for the treatment of constipation, particularly in cases associated with laxative habituation or where soft stools are medically beneficial, such as for children, obstetric, and post-surgical patients. Additionally, Duphalac 150ml Syrup is used in the management of hepatic encephalopathy, including hepatic coma or precoma stages where hyperammonaemia is present. In this application, lactulose works by lowering the pH of colonic contents, converting non-ionised ammonia into an ionised, non-absorbable form, and promoting its excretion, alongside enhancing the growth of saccharolytic bacteria which decreases ammonia formation.

Duphalac 150ml Syrup is administered orally and may be taken diluted or undiluted. It is recommended to ensure adequate fluid intake (1.5-2 liters per day) during treatment. The therapeutic effect for constipation typically manifests after 2 to 3 days of treatment.
