• Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, difficulty in passing urine, increased sweating, tiredness or sleepiness, and weight gain. These often improve with continued use.
• Less common or more serious side effects can include cardiac arrhythmia, orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing), seizures, confusion or hallucinations (especially in elderly patients), tremors, changes in sex drive, changes in heartbeat, skin rash, or allergic reactions.
• An increased risk of bone fractures has been observed in patients taking this type of medicine.
• Rarely, a potentially life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome may occur, characterized by symptoms such as high fever, agitation, increased reflexes, tremor, sweating, dilated pupils, and diarrhea. Seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms appear.
