Dosage and Administration

Mirena is an intrauterine device that must be inserted and removed by a trained healthcare professional.
For contraception, it is effective for up to 8 years. For treating heavy menstrual bleeding, it is effective for up to 5 years.
A follow-up examination is typically recommended 4-12 weeks after insertion, and then annually.
If pregnancy is not desired, a new system can be inserted immediately after removal.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store at room temperature, generally between 15-30 °C.
  • Keep away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets. Return unused or expired medications to the pharmacy for proper disposal.

Precautions and Safety

  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, as some may affect Mirena's efficacy.
  • Consult your healthcare provider immediately if you experience severe pain or fever shortly after Mirena is placed, as this could indicate a serious infection.
  • Mirena does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • Use is not recommended during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs with Mirena in place, contact your healthcare professional immediately for removal.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Common side effects include cramps, headache, migraine, bleeding, dizziness after device insertion, abdominal/pelvic pain, changes in menstrual bleeding patterns (spotting, lighter or heavier bleeding, or periods stopping), vaginal discharge, vulvovaginitis, breast pain, back pain, acne, and depression/depressive mood.
  • Consult your doctor if symptoms like pain or dizziness last longer than 30 minutes after insertion, or if bleeding remains heavier or lasts longer than usual.
  • Serious but rare side effects can include ectopic pregnancy, life-threatening infection (sepsis), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine perforation, or expulsion of the device.
