Precautions and Safety

  • Azathioprine may increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer, including skin cancer and lymphoma. Limit exposure to sunlight and UV light, wear protective clothing, and use a high-factor sunscreen.
  • This medicine can lower your body's resistance to infection. Avoid contact with sick individuals and practice frequent hand washing. Do not receive live vaccines without your doctor's approval, and avoid close contact with household members who have recently received live virus vaccines.
  • Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor for potential bone marrow suppression, which can lead to low white blood cell, red blood cell, and platelet counts.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or certain enzyme disorders (TPMT or NUDT15 deficiency), as these conditions may require dose adjustments or alternative therapies.
  • Azathioprine can harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control during treatment. It passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant, so breastfeeding is generally not recommended.
  • Discuss all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal products, with your doctor or pharmacist to avoid potential interactions.
