Dosage and Administration

Amikarex 2ml injection is administered by a healthcare professional, either as an intramuscular (IM) injection or an intravenous (IV) infusion. The specific dosage and duration of treatment are determined by the prescribing doctor based on the patient's age, body weight, kidney function, and the severity of the infection. For intravenous administration, the solution is typically infused over 30 to 60 minutes for adults, and 1 to 2 hours for infants and paediatric patients. It should not be physically premixed with other drugs.

 

Storage and Disposal

  • Store Amikarex 2ml injection at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F), or below 25°C.
  • Do not freeze the injection.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • The diluted solution should be used immediately and not stored.
  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
  • Dispose of used needles and medicines responsibly as advised by your pharmacist or healthcare provider.

Precautions and Safety

  • Amikarex 2ml injection can cause serious side effects, including damage to the kidneys (nephrotoxicity) and ears (ototoxicity), which may manifest as hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or loss of balance.
  • Neuromuscular blockade and respiratory paralysis have been reported; caution is advised, especially in patients receiving anaesthetics or neuromuscular blocking agents.
  • Allergic reactions, including severe anaphylactic reactions, can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
  • This medicine is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to amikacin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics, and in those with myasthenia gravis.
  • Use with caution in patients with pre-existing kidney problems, hearing difficulties, or a history of antibiotic-related hearing loss, or mitochondrial mutation disease.
  • Patients should be well hydrated before and during treatment.
  • Avoid concurrent use with potent diuretics (e.g., furosemide, ethacrynic acid) and other neurotoxic, ototoxic, or nephrotoxic agents, as this may increase the risk of adverse effects.
  • Regular monitoring of kidney function, hearing, and serum amikacin levels is essential throughout the treatment course.
  • Amikarex 2ml injection contains sodium metabisulfite, which may cause allergic-type reactions in susceptible individuals.
  • This antibiotic is effective only against bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu.

 

Side Effects and Risks

  • Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, fever, pain or swelling at the injection site, loss of appetite, fatigue, dizziness, rash, itching, dry mouth, abdominal pain, constipation, insomnia, changes in taste, muscle weakness, and dry skin.
  • Serious side effects: Signs of kidney problems (decreased urination, swelling of the face, arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, unusual tiredness or weakness), hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), loss of balance, nerve problems (burning, tingling, numbness, muscle twitching or weakness, seizures), severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, hoarseness, severe skin rash, peeling or blistering skin, hives, swelling of eyes, face, throat, tongue, or lips), and vision loss (macular infarction).
