Bipap machine is used to provide the breathing support required by the patients who suffer with Sleep Apnea and COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). BIPAP stands for Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure. The name itself suggests that it functions by delivering positive pressure. The term Bilevel means that there are two types of pressure generated in BIPAP. One is IPAP which means Inspiratory Positive Airway Pressure which is delivered when patient inhales air and other is EPAP which is Expiratory Positive Pressure Airway which is delivered when patient exhales air. IN BIPAP, IPAP is always higher than EPAP so that the patient can exhale air easily. to create a positive pressure which will help in respiration by opening lungs by this pressure. Also called as "Positive Pressure Ventilation".
