Types of intravenous access –
- Peripheral lines – are used on peripheral veins such as on hands, legs, etc. This is the most common type of IV administration
- Central lines – IV lines have their catheters and are advanced to a larger vein such as inferior vena cava, superior vena cava, and sometimes the right atrium of the heart. It is used when there is a requirement for a prolonged infusion, and multiple drugs can be delivered.
